Travelling by train is perhaps one of the most pleasant, relaxing ways to travel. Without the bizarre disorientation of flying, isolated from your surroundings and with exhausting waits at each end, travelling by train is true travel, where the journey is as important as the destination itself.
Sadly, in the UK we are faced with some of the highest train fares in Europe, an intolerable sitation caused by a bizarre free market mentality that values privatisation above else - regardless of the fact that since there is no competition on individual routes train travellers are stiffed with the worst sides of private enterprise profiteering without any of the improvements in customer service or cost reductions that genuine competition can bring.
Train fares are rubbish. But by booking in advance, choosing your routes carefully and booking each leg with the operator who runs that particular route you can make considerable savings over the standard single far price.
